Park and Claim

"the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind"

Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies

We have the tools to map the asteroid belt, and claim rich asteroids. The wealth would greatly exceed our national debt. Debt relief could be applied to any country willing to improve human rights, or reduce nuclear proliferation. All we have to do is assay the wealth of an asteroid, and park a space craft on it. Instead of Fort Knox, it's Rock Knox. We don't have to mine anything, but the wealth must exist. The world's debt may be forgiven.

NASA has recently built a small cube satellite based on a droid phone for a cost of $3,500. A thousand of these would cost $3,500,000. They're powered by micro thrusters developed by MIT. Additional infrared sensors could be added to detect minerals. Control craft would be required, to relay data, and monitor the cubes and provide a positioning system, similar to our GPS (ABPS - Asteroid Belt Positioning System). We have the technology. This can be done. If we wait, this wealth will be turned over to the private sector or foreign governments. There should be enough for all countries, and the private sector.

We have an innate curiosity. What is over the distant mountain? What is across the sea? Over 500 years have passed since explorers sought out new lands and founded our great continent. Three ships commissioned by Spain discovered America. They were followed by pioneers and colonists. They came seeking freedom. They came to escape aristocracy, and founded a nation on the premise that all men are created equal - that our opportunities and responsibilities be shared. That wealth and power would give way to the will of the people, and that all would share the burdens and benefits of citizenship.

To our west was a frontier, an unexplored wilderness. America expanded in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase, and Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Lewis and Clark's transcontinental expedition. The Pacific Railroad Act provided land grants for the development of the transcontinental railroad. We were a nation on a roll - fueled by our natural abundance, and a government that had the foresight to encourage development.

The excellence of America was built on a combination of government, and a constitution that preserves and protects freedom. Given the opportunity, we can set aside our differences and reach for the stars.

The Bible proclaims Jubilee, not just the forgiveness of sin, but the forgiveness of debt. By mapping and claiming the asteroid belt, the entire debt of the world can be forgiven. Already, private companies are planning for asteroid mining.

Just as we promoted private companies to build the transcontinental railroad, public grants can stimulate private asteroid mining and exploration. Freeing the world of debt will steer us to the next frontier. Parking a small cubesat on an asteroid, and claiming the resources is all that is necessary. In an infinite universe, there is infinite wealth.
